Key vocabulary
- analogue
- digital
- AM
- PM
- minute
Curriculum: National Curriculum 2014: Year 3 Mathematics — Measurement
Starter (5-10 minutes)
Show six analogue clock faces on the board. Pupils write the time shown to the nearest five minutes on whiteboards. Cold-call three pupils to explain their reading, including how they used the minute hand position.
Main activity (35-40 minutes)
Model reading times to the nearest minute using a large geared clock. Show the link between 'half past three' and 03:30 (and the 24-hour 15:30). Pupils complete a worked example matching analogue, 12-hour digital, and 24-hour digital times. Move to a partner activity: pupil A sets a time on a learner clock, pupil B writes it three ways. Final task: solve a real-life problem — 'A train leaves at 14:25 and the journey takes 47 minutes. What time does it arrive?'
Differentiation
Support
Focus on times to the nearest five minutes rather than the nearest minute. Use a labelled clock face with minute markers visible.
Core
Read and write times to the nearest minute in 12-hour and 24-hour formats. Convert between the two.
Stretch
Solve multi-step time problems involving duration crossing the noon boundary, e.g. start 11:45, duration 2 hours 30 minutes — what time does it end?
Plenary (5-10 minutes)
Display three times in different formats (analogue, 12-hour, 24-hour) all showing the same moment. Pupils explain why they are equivalent. Discuss when each format is used in real life.
Common misconception to watch for
Pupils often forget that AM and PM are needed in 12-hour format but not in 24-hour, and that 24:00 is not a valid time. Reinforce by showing the rollover at midnight.
