Year 5 Maths Lesson Plan: Place Value to 1,000,000

Free Year 5 maths lesson plan on place value with numbers up to 1,000,000. Read, write, compare, order, and round to powers of 10. Differentiation included.

Learning objective

I can read, write, compare, and round numbers to at least 1,000,000 to any power of 10.

Curriculum: National Curriculum 2014: Year 5 Mathematics — Number and place value

Starter (5-10 minutes)

Display the number 768,432. Pupils read the number aloud, write each digit's value on whiteboards (e.g. the 7 = 700,000), and identify the largest and smallest place values shown.

Main activity (35-40 minutes)

Use a place-value chart extending to hundred thousands and millions. Pupils build numbers using digit cards and partition them. Move to rounding: round 768,432 to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000. Make explicit the rule (look at the digit one place to the right; if 5 or more round up, otherwise round down). Pupils complete a rounding ladder for five different numbers. Final task: order five 6-digit numbers from smallest to largest, then write each rounded to the nearest 10,000.

Differentiation

Support

Work with 5-digit numbers initially before extending to 6-digit. Use a place-value chart visibly throughout.

Core

Read, write, and round 6-digit numbers to any power of 10 from 10 to 100,000.

Stretch

Round 7-digit numbers (up to 10,000,000) and solve problems where the rounded answer must satisfy multiple conditions.

Plenary (5-10 minutes)

Show 549,500. Discuss why this rounds up to 550,000 to the nearest 1,000 but down to 500,000 to the nearest 100,000. Reinforce: the rounding rule depends on the place you are rounding to.

Common misconception to watch for

Pupils sometimes round all the way down by truncating rather than applying the 5-or-more rule. Reinforce with examples either side of the boundary (e.g. 4,499 → 4,000 vs 4,500 → 5,000 to nearest 1,000).
