Year 5 Maths Lesson Plan: Translation and Reflection

Free Year 5 maths lesson plan on translating shapes on a coordinate grid and reflecting shapes across a line of symmetry. Differentiation included.

Learning objective

I can translate and reflect shapes on a coordinate grid and describe their movement using mathematical language.

Key vocabulary

  • coordinate
  • translate
  • reflect
  • axis
  • mirror line

Curriculum: National Curriculum 2014: Year 5 Mathematics — Geometry

Starter (5-10 minutes)

Show a coordinate grid with a triangle plotted at (2, 3), (4, 3), (3, 5). Pupils write the coordinates on whiteboards. Move to: where would the shape be after a translation of 3 right and 2 up?

Main activity (35-40 minutes)

Model translating a shape by counting each vertex's movement. Pupils complete three translation tasks on grid paper, recording the new coordinates. Move to reflection: introduce the mirror line and model reflecting a shape across the y-axis. Pupils reflect three shapes across given mirror lines (vertical, horizontal). Final task: describe in words the transformation that maps shape A onto shape B.

Differentiation

Support

Use grids with named coordinates pre-printed. Translations only initially before introducing reflection.

Core

Translate and reflect shapes accurately on a coordinate grid in the first quadrant. Describe transformations in words.

Stretch

Apply translations and reflections in all four quadrants. Combine two transformations and describe the result.

Plenary (5-10 minutes)

Show two identical-looking shapes — one is a translation of the other, the other is a reflection. Pupils identify which is which and justify.

Common misconception to watch for

Pupils sometimes reflect by sliding rather than flipping, especially when the shape is asymmetrical. Reinforce with the 'mirror line' visualisation — every point's mirror image is the same distance from the line on the opposite side.
