Year 6 Fractions Lesson Plan: Mixed Numbers and Division
Free Year 6 maths lesson plan on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing mixed-number fractions. SATs-style reasoning and differentiation.
Learning objective
I can add, subtract, multiply, and divide proper fractions and mixed numbers, simplifying where possible.
Key vocabulary
- mixed number
- improper
- simplify
- common denominator
- reciprocal
Curriculum: National Curriculum 2014: Year 6 Mathematics — Fractions
Starter (5-10 minutes)
Convert 7/4 to a mixed number (1 3/4) and 2 1/3 to an improper fraction (7/3). Pupils explain method on whiteboards. Reinforce: divide numerator by denominator for mixed; multiply whole by denominator and add numerator for improper.
Main activity (35-40 minutes)
Add 1 1/2 + 2 3/4 by converting to improper fractions, finding a common denominator (3/2 + 11/4 = 6/4 + 11/4 = 17/4 = 4 1/4). Pupils complete five mixed-number additions and subtractions. Move to division: model 1/2 ÷ 1/4 by multiplying by the reciprocal (1/2 × 4/1 = 2). Pupils complete four fraction divisions. Final task: SATs-style reasoning — 'A recipe needs 3/4 cup of flour. How many full recipes can be made from 6 cups?' (8).
Differentiation
Support
Use fraction tiles for adding mixed numbers. Limit divisions to unit fractions only.
Core
Operate on mixed numbers using all four operations. Simplify final answers.
Stretch
Solve multi-step problems combining mixed numbers and decimals, and justify why dividing by a fraction less than 1 increases the value.
Plenary (5-10 minutes)
Show 2 1/2 ÷ 1/2. Pupils explain in their own words why the answer is 5 (how many halves fit in 2 1/2?).
Common misconception to watch for
Pupils often add numerators and denominators separately when adding fractions (e.g. 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5). Reinforce with diagrams that this gives the wrong answer; a common denominator is always required.
