Curriculum: National Curriculum 2014: Year 6 Mathematics — Number and place value
Starter (5-10 minutes)
SATs-style retrieval: pupils read aloud and write in figures: three million two hundred and forty-seven thousand five hundred and one. Repeat with two more numbers. Discuss the role of commas/spaces.
Main activity (35-40 minutes)
Use a place-value chart extending to ten millions. Pupils build large numbers using digit cards. Round 4,536,287 to the nearest 100,000 and to the nearest 1,000,000 — discuss why the answers differ. Pupils complete a rounding worksheet for five 7-digit numbers, rounding each to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000, and 1000000. Move to a SATs-style reasoning question: 'A number rounds to 4,500,000 to the nearest 100,000. The digit in the ten-thousands place is 7. Suggest a possible value.'
Differentiation
Support
Stick to 6-digit numbers before progressing to 7-digit. Use a place-value chart consistently.
Core
Read, write, round, and compare 7-digit numbers. Apply rounding to a given degree of accuracy.
Stretch
Solve SATs-style reasoning questions where multiple rounding constraints apply simultaneously.
Plenary (5-10 minutes)
Show 6,549,999 and 6,550,000 side by side. Pupils discuss which rounds up to 7,000,000 and which to 6,500,000 when rounded to the nearest million and 100,000 respectively. Reinforce that rounding always depends on the place being rounded to.
Common misconception to watch for
Pupils often misplace zeros when reading and writing 7-digit numbers (e.g. writing four million two hundred thousand as 4,2000,000). Reinforce with the place-value chart.
