Game-Based Learning: The Evidence on Games, Gamification, and What Actually Works

Classroom examples across phases

Primary. Year 4 mathematics fluency. A short-session arcade game where students defend a base against incoming problems. To solve an incoming problem, they must answer correctly. Best fit: fluency-based content (arithmetic facts, vocabulary, grammar drills), case-based reasoning (clinical, historical, economic), content with natural simulation potential (physics, engineering, economics, ecology), and revision for summative assessment.

Poor fit: content where the game elements distract from conceptual understanding; content that requires sustained extended writing or long-form argument; classrooms where the game equipment or technology is unreliable.

Teacher requirements, assessment, and resources

Game-based learning and gamification can be cheap (analogue games, simple class-wide point systems) or expensive (purpose-built digital games and simulations).
