Year 4 Maths Lesson Plan: Fractions and Decimals

Free Year 4 maths lesson plan on fractions, decimals, and the link between them. Tenths, hundredths, equivalents, and rounding to the nearest whole number.

Learning objective

I can recognise tenths and hundredths as decimals and identify equivalent fractions and decimals.

Key vocabulary

  • decimal
  • tenths
  • hundredths
  • equivalent
  • round

Curriculum: National Curriculum 2014: Year 4 Mathematics — Fractions and decimals

Starter (5-10 minutes)

Show a 100-square with 35 squares shaded. Pupils write the fraction (35/100) and the decimal (0.35) on whiteboards. Repeat with three more shaded examples to embed the link.

Main activity (35-40 minutes)

Model the link: 0.1 = 1/10, 0.01 = 1/100. Use base-10 equipment representing wholes, tenths, and hundredths. Pupils complete a matching exercise pairing fractions with their decimal equivalents (1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25, 3/10 = 0.3, 7/100 = 0.07). Move to ordering: place 0.4, 1/2, 0.35, 7/10 in order on a number line. Final task: round 0.6, 0.4, 1.5, 2.7 to the nearest whole number.

Differentiation

Support

Work with tenths only before progressing to hundredths. Use a 100-square consistently as a visual scaffold.

Core

Match, order, and round fractions and decimals to the nearest whole. Convert between fractions and decimals for tenths and hundredths.

Stretch

Solve problems combining decimals and fractions (e.g. 0.4 + 1/4) and order a mixed set including improper fractions and decimals.

Plenary (5-10 minutes)

True or false: 0.07 is greater than 0.7. Pupils justify in pairs using place value. Reveal — false; the 7 in 0.7 has a value of 7/10, the 7 in 0.07 has a value of 7/100.

Common misconception to watch for

Pupils often think 0.7 < 0.35 because 35 > 7. Reinforce by showing both on a number line — 0.7 is much further along than 0.35.
