Year 4 Multiplication and Division Lesson Plan (Tables to 12)

Free Year 4 maths lesson plan on multiplication and division facts up to 12×12. Starter, main activity, partner work, differentiation, and plenary.

Learning objective

I can recall and use multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12 fluently.

Key vocabulary

  • multiply
  • divide
  • factor
  • product
  • multiple

Curriculum: National Curriculum 2014: Year 4 Mathematics — Multiplication and division

Starter (5-10 minutes)

Times-tables fluency check using the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) format: 25 random multiplications up to 12×12, six seconds per question. Display percentage score at the end. Set a target for the lesson.

Main activity (35-40 minutes)

Reveal a multiplication grid covering 1× to 12× facts. Identify patterns (square numbers on the diagonal, 9× pattern, doubling links between 2×, 4×, 8×). Pupils complete a missing-fact worksheet and then a 'three-in-a-row' game in pairs, taking turns to answer multiplication or division facts. Move to applying facts to division: 'I have 96 cakes shared equally between 8 trays. How many on each tray?'

Differentiation

Support

Use a printed multiplication grid as a scaffold. Focus on 6×, 7×, 9×, and 11× facts — the typical weak points.

Core

Recall and apply facts up to 12×12. Use them to solve one-step division problems.

Stretch

Solve problems involving factor pairs and missing operations (e.g. 7 × ___ = 84, ___ ÷ 6 = 12) and apply to two-step word problems.

Plenary (5-10 minutes)

Show 144. Pupils write all the factor pairs in 90 seconds (1×144, 2×72, 3×48, 4×36, 6×24, 8×18, 9×16, 12×12). Discuss why 144 is a square number.

Common misconception to watch for

Pupils often confuse 7×8 and 6×9 because the products are close. Use targeted retrieval practice rather than block repetition to embed.
