Free Year 4 maths lesson plan on interpreting bar charts and pictograms and answering one-step and two-step questions from data.

Learning objective

I can interpret and present discrete data using bar charts and pictograms, and answer one-step and two-step questions about it.

Curriculum: National Curriculum 2014: Year 4 Mathematics — Statistics

Starter (5-10 minutes)

Display a pictogram showing favourite school dinners, where each symbol represents 5 children. Pupils answer three quick questions: How many chose pizza? How many more chose pasta than salad? What is the total surveyed?

Main activity (35-40 minutes)

Move to bar charts. Show a bar chart of rainfall across five months with a scale of 5 mm per division. Model reading values, then comparing two months. Pupils complete a worksheet of one-step and two-step questions (e.g. 'How much rain in total in March and April?'). Final task: pupils survey their own table — favourite fruit — and present results as a bar chart with a scale of their choice.

Differentiation

Support

Use pictograms only with a 1:1 key. Pre-drawn axes for any survey work.

Core

Interpret bar charts and pictograms with scaled keys (1:5, 1:10). Answer one-step and two-step questions.

Stretch

Identify potentially misleading aspects of a chart (e.g. broken axis, inconsistent scale) and suggest improvements.

Plenary (5-10 minutes)

Discuss the choice of scale: when would 1 division = 1 unit be appropriate? When would 1 division = 5 or 10 units be better? Why does scale matter?

Common misconception to watch for

Pupils often misread pictograms when each symbol represents more than one item, treating each symbol as 1 regardless of the key. Always read the key first.
